These brief notes regarding Chester County are not meant to leave the impression that this is all that is known about Chester County. If time permitted for research, more of the communities in the county could be included and much more could be said regarding those that are included. The history of the various churches is omitted on purpose because there are so many involved that the time needed for research and the space that would be required make such impractical for this short history. Our report does not include many events in the lifetime of the present generation because of the limitations of time and space.
Our information comes from brief written materials from many sources as well as from testimony of living witnesses. You may find errors. You may wonder why certain facts and individuals are not included. If so, this may be a challenge to the reader to produce a more comprehensive story of Chester County.
The reader should keep in mind that Chester is a young county and was originally parts of Madison, Henderson, McNairy and Hardeman counties until its formation in 1882. Those of us who live in Chester County now will find records of land deeds, census records, etc., prior to 1882, in one of the four counties from which Chester County was formed. Before 1882 Henderson was in Madison County, Mifflin and Jacks Creek were in Henderson County, and Montezuma, Masseyville, and Woodville were in McNairy County.
It is our sincere hope that you will experience some sense of appreciation or enjoyment, either from the written material or the pictures.
